PROOF OF LIFE

Leena

“Keep it together.” I throw some water on my face to calm myself. What I’m about to do goes against everything I originally promised. Yet I can’t help myself. I need to talk to Abby and let her know I’m okay.

I wasn’t planning on contacting my sister when Declan first asked me to lunch. However, the closer we got to the café, the stronger the urge to act became. Our conversation about people coming after me and him needing to keep me safe sealed the deal.

What if something happened to me? Would they tell Abby or keep her in the dark?

Probably the latter, but I should still give her some peace of mind.

According to Owen, Declan and Ricard did their best to make it appear as if I died, but I know my sister. Unless there was a physical body, she would continue to look for me. I can’t blame her because I’d do the same thing.

I won’t leave the pack or Declan, for that matter. The mere thought of it upsets my inner she-wolf. Honestly, the reaction to him is strange. I’ve had several relationships, but never once have I had this raw need for another man. It feels bone-deep, even soul-searing. I want him to consume me, and with the way he kisses, I’m certain he will.

Soon. I hope.

It’s understandable why the past few weeks have limited our alone time. On top of training, getting acclimated to my new life kept me busy. But the quick kisses are no longer enough. I admit that I want him, but the only way I can give myself completely over is to make sure Abby will be fine without me.

The sound of the running faucet next to me startles me out of my thoughts. I glance over at a woman scrubbing her hands. While she rubs them together, she hums the “Happy Birthday” tune.

“Sorry.” She laughs, rinsing the remainder suds off her skin. “In school, they taught us to wash our hands for the entire song length. No matter how hard I try, I’m unable to stop singing. It’s also a bit calming.”

I study her closely and realize she’s wearing scrubs. Healthcare workers are constantly washing their hands, so her conversation makes more sense.

“Are you a doctor?” I blurt.

“Heavens, no. Nurses are cooler.” She dries her hands on the paper towel.

“True.” I smile, and I hope it appears genuine. “Can I borrow your phone for a second?”

Her eyes flash in surprise. It’s then she inclines her head to the side and studies me.

“Is everything okay?”

“Yeah,” I reply quickly, showing no concern. “I, um, left my phone at home, and I just remembered something important I needed to tell my sister. I promise I’ll be quick.”

She bites her bottom lip in contemplation. “Okay.”

“Thank you.”

The woman snags her phone from her back pocket, taps the screen, and hands it to me. Then I dial Abby’s number from memory.

“Hello?”

I don’t say a word. I only listen to her voice.

“Anyone there?” She pauses, and I sniffle.
